or not. This was followed by a (very) short presentation of what the instructor would have done using aKeynote slide presentation.Demonstrations: We used the demonstrations that were typically planned for that part of thesyllabus as a method of group inquiry. We either asked the groups to predict what would happenin our demonstration, or we asked them the explain why we observed the phenomenon that justoccurred. For example, to demonstrate the bcc to fcc phase transformation in pure iron uponheating or cooling we had fixed a length of piano wire (very low carbon steel) to two posts.Passing ac current through it with a Variac heated it resistively. We first asked the student topredict what would happen. Then we did the experiment and asked

Plan Miller Indices.Figure 5. Analytics for Arizona of views and minutes versus date for the Miller Indices video. While the previous YouTube video tutorial had little if any impact on student achievement, theEutectic Phase Diagram Calculation (Figure 6) and Microstructure Muddiest Point Tutorial Page 23.916.12videos had a dramatic effect on scores on Test #2 which was focused on phase diagramcalculations and microstructures. We will discuss only the video usage for the Calculations videosince the Microstructure video showed very similar features and trends. As can be seen belowthere is a significant spike on October 10, 2012 with 216 minutes and

designingmaterials with their end use in mind, all of the students built on the content they found interestingin class and some even claimed responsibility (e.g. “It is our duty as inventors/innovators to beproducing but also protecting our planet.”). One student in particular applied their learningsbeyond that of traditional materials to that of the software industry, communicating advancedapplication of this content: “I am planning on working in the software industry, and while a lot ofit is virtual, it made me think about creating software that works on multiple platforms andcreating systems that do not become obsolete so quickly but finding ways to make them work foras long as possible.”Final comments that students left only further emphasized the

memo.3) Assignment 3There are required and optional parts for this assignment. The required part is a PowerPointpresentation from each group to present their results in the class at the end of the semester.Grading of this assignment was based on presentation skills and the content. The optional part isfor the students to make extra points. It is an ambitious plan to ask first semester freshmen towrite a formal project report and do a test that they have never done before. For this last part ofthe project, only those students who feel confident and interested to earn extra points would dothis part. A bending test was asked to be performed in the material lab to find the failure load ofthe component, and then to compare the test result with the

,“learner centered” course. While we did indeed invest a great deal of time and energy thus far tocreate this comprehensive transformation, we believe that the students enjoy materialsengineering to a higher degree, are more involved in their own learning, and score somewhathigher, as a group, on certain classical examination questions. Unfortunately, our sample sizesare still small, but we will continue to build an assessment data base for this course as wecontinue to teach and modify this course. Because the initial assessment data is at leastencouraging, we plan to continue making changes to the course that encourage activeinvolvement of the students in their own learning. Since it is a rare student who has no contactwith or interest in music
