program for the academic year of 2018-2019.Prof. Andre Schleife, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Andr´e Schleife is a Blue Waters Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engi- neering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Research in his group revolves around excited electronic states and their real-time dynamics in various materials using accurate computational methods and making use of modern super computers. Schleife obtained his Diploma and Ph.D. at Friedrich- Schiller-University in Jena, Germany for theoretical and computational work on transparent conducting oxides. Before he started at UIUC he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Lawrence Livermore Na- tional

courses, feminist and liberative pedagogies, engineering student persistence, and student autonomy. Her research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. Lord is a fellow of the ASEE and IEEE and is active in the engineering education community including serving as General Co-Chair of the 2006 Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference, on the FIE Steering Committee, and as President of the IEEE Education Society for 2009-2010. She is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Education. She and her coauthors were awarded the 2011 Wickenden Award for the best paper in the Journal of Engineering Education and the 2011 and 2015 Best Paper Awards for the IEEE Transactions on Education. 2018, she was an assistant professor of practice in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at OSU. In Autumn 2018, she joined Campbell University as an Associate Professor of Engineering. Dr. Polasik’s research interests include modeling of microstructure-property relationships in metals, as- sessment of educational outcomes, and engineering-specific epistemology in undergraduate students. Dr. Polasik is a member of ASM, TMS, and ASEE. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2019 Interactive and Collaborative Materials Science and Processing Course with Integrated LabIntroductionResearch has established that learning is dramatically improved

science and engineering application. Her research interests are in efficient manufacturing of high performance composites. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2019 Active learning in an introductory materials science courseAbstractA lecture-based introductory materials science course was converted to an active learningexperience without altering the scheduling of the course, classroom location, or faculty contacthours. Group lab activities, using simple and inexpensive materials, were incorporated into thecourse to enhance student engagement and understanding. Throughout a 15 week semester, 10labs were performed. Each lab was completed and submitted during a class period, with studentsworking
