This paperdescribes how 3D printing (3DP) and computer-aided design (CAD) were integrated into aMaterials Science and Engineering (MSE) curriculum and the impact of the integration over thepast five years. The integration focused on two senior-level courses that include both a lectureand a lab component as well as a design project. The fall course addresses materialsperformance and failure, including plastic deformation, fracture, fatigue and creep, and thespring course focuses on materials processing, including traditional routes such as extrusion,injection molding, forging and powder compaction, as well as a variety of 3DP (additivemanufacturing) methods. In the fall of 2016, Campbell University introduced a general engineeringprogram that incorporates project-based courses throughout the curriculum and teaches mostengineering courses in a Classroom Laboratory (ClassLab), blending the content-focused(lecture) and hands-on (lab) aspects of engineering classes into a seamless course offering. Following IRB protocol, they were informed of their potential roles andrights should they choose to engage as participants in the research, as well as their option to notparticipate. All students elected to serve as participants.
