and despitevery positive faculty and student perceptions, it is not easy to expand the set of math facultywilling to try the technology. Yet, interest in Tablet PCs (and MessageGrid) is flourishing atClemson, due to a 2007 Hewlett Packard Leadership Grant which placed Tablet PCs into amultidisciplinary technology classroom and attracted faculty from Engineering and otherdepartments willing to invest time to learn new pedagogical techniques.Introduction Approximately 20% of students in first-semester Freshman Calculus at Clemson Universityin Fall 2007 earned Ds (poor), Fs (fail) or Ws (withdraw) and either had to repeat the course orabandon their STEM career goals. This DFW rate represented nearly a 50% reduction in the ratefrom Fall 2005

Recruiting, Preparation, and CommunicationEffective communication with potential students about the Distance Calculus program is anessential component to a successful experience. The communication must start early, continuethroughout the program, and provide the students with accurate and timely information. Studentsshould hear as early as possible in their high school career about the course requirements in orderto ensure that they have the proper qualifications for eligibility. Ideally, this communicationshould begin in the 9th grade so that students can plot a path that allows them to complete APCalculus by their junior year. have embarked(since the inception of project (January of 2006)) in an aggressive marketing campaign to informUCF STEM applicants and their parents of the benefits in participating at the EXCEL program atUCF (e.g., guaranteed housing, block scheduling, exposure to the applications of Calculus fromearly on in their college careers, tutoring and personalized attention at the EXCEL Center,amongst others). The details of the EXCEL marketing strategies to recruit students are discussedin later sections of this paper. In summary, EXCEL has received in 1142 applications (06, 07 and08) and has recruited 565 students into the program.To achieve the second objective, the EXCEL faculty have designed a carefully thought out setof educational activities

AC 2009-700: VISUAL ANALYSIS AND THE COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONSAndrew Grossfield, Vaughn College of Aeronautics Throughout his career Dr. Grossfield has combined an interest in engineering design and mathematics. He studied Electrical Engineering at the City College of New York, graduating with a BSEE. During the sixties, he attended the NYU Courant Institute at night, obtaining an M.S. degree in mathematics, while designing circuitry full time during the day for aerospace/avionics companies. He earned his doctorate studying Continuum Mechanics under the direction of L. M. Milne-Thomson, CBE at The University of Arizona. He is a member of ASEE, IEEE, and MAA.
