In engineering programs, research is an excellent way ofproviding project-based learning opportunities to students while working toward meaningfulgoals that have the potential to change society for the better.In this paper, we describe the efforts of a team of undergraduate mechanical engineering studentsin creating and demonstrating an experimental silicone venous valve model and flow controlsystem for use in future scientific research aimed at ultimately reducing the impact of awidespread but often unseen disease.
