[2].While the seminar is open to all students, its focus is to be supportive of military students inparticular. As such, this intervention has an added focus on military student inclusion throughintegrated peer awareness training, peer mentorship, and allyship.Using design-based research (DBR), a multi-disciplinary design and development researchmethodology advanced by the learning sciences and modeled after engineering design principles[3], [4], we are developing the seminar series over multiple iterations with volunteer post-traditional and military student participants. During successive iterations, we are collaborativelydeveloping the seminar curriculum, gathering student and partner/stakeholder feedback, andupdating the curriculum based

, services specificto veteran students, and a better understanding of military culture, and what their service meanswithin a broader campus context.Additionally, quantitative academic data from years 2021/22 through 2023/24 were analyzed toexamine DFW rates in key gateway courses, levels of remedial coursework, and academicwarning/suspension rates for veteran students versus their traditional college-age peers. Anupdated survey has been disseminated at the start of spring 2025 as a follow-up to the originalsurvey. Questions remain in line with the original iteration, and examine pathways to enrollment, awareness and satisfaction with academic and support services, engagement with campusactivities, perceptions regarding veteran friendliness, and types

STEMresearch experiences in defense relevant research areas and to teach the participants about careeropportunities in the Naval civilian research enterprise, as well as other research career pathswithin the defense industry. In addition to gaining hands-on research experience and mentoring, the students received training from each university's Office of Undergraduate Research in topicsrelated to the nature of research, the ethics of researchers, and the mechanics of writing andpublishing research.Initially the program also included travel for both the student veterans and their faculty mentorsto the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C., to meet their NRL mentors in person, andto present on their summer research. COVID-19 prevented these trips

following step-by-step modeling inindustry-driven courses. As part of coaching, internship opportunities allowed experts inhardware security to observe and facilitate students’ performance. Throughout the program, students were guided, supported in practicing and applying their knowledge, and encouraged tocollaborate with peers. This progression represented scaffolding, articulation, and reflection, which are crucial components of the cognitive apprenticeship model. Additionally, students wereencouraged to explore their careers and the domain independently, solving problems on theirown.Third, Sequencing emphasizes the significance of learning order, advocating for conceptualunderstanding before practice, a progression from simple to complex tasks
