In November of 2020, The Orlando Sentinel ‘s front page read that more poor, Black andHispanic students opted for online learning. How would this turn out? Would children learn?What can we do to mitigate not only the fear of failure but also lack of success? In Florida, Blackstudents were not returning to school. , Division of Science Resources Statistics, reported that the totalnumber of bachelor’s degrees awarded to U.S. citizens and permanent residents in Science andEngineering fields in 2006 was 473,533 [3]. Where 8.3% of the S&E students were Black, 7.7%Hispanic, .7% American Indian/Alaska Native, 9.3% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 64.7% were White.In 1997, the total number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to U.S. citizens and permanent residents inScience and Engineering fields was 388,482 [3]. Where 7.7% were Black, 6.3% Hispanic, .59%American Indian/ Alaska Native, 8.4% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 70.7% were White. This trend inthe increasing minority representation in S&E graduates leads to a major socio-technologicalchange in the United States

correlations such as those listed above provide motivation for the development ofinnovative activities that begin to integrate STEM and music for undergraduates. With suchactivities, questions arise about the role(s) that music might play in the achievement andretention of undergraduate STEM students, particularly URM students. It is hypothesized that ifminorities pursuing degrees in STEM participate in music and/or music-related activities, theirsuccess in STEM might increase. Prior to the meeting, the Graduate Fellow assesses the availability ofUndergraduate Fellows in January and February. In the past, we have started with the names of three students perteacher for a total of 12 students. dearth of students with strong skills in STEMfields. FEF hires and pays certified teachers and an administrator for each camp, as well as acollege or graduate student(s) to assist camp teachers. Staff also administers at least foursimulated SAT math assessments. It is believe that this repeated exposure to the test and testingenvironment help students alleviate anxiety and common test-taking missteps, such as theimproper use of time and guessing. Daily hands-on activities which are structured to apply mathin projects from exciting fields like aerospace technology, robotics, engineering, computing arepresented. To date, a total of 1,815 students have graduated from FEF summer collegepreparatory programs. In 2010, 392 students participated in

. The thrustpower is adequate to maintain adequate velocity of the boat to cover 10 to 20 ft/s. The ruddersystem allows quick turning action and a bumper in front of the boat protects it against collisionwith underwater rocks and debris. The NXT based system has also allowed students to use theplatform to learn and implement software tools such as ROBOTC and LABVIEW, over andabove the NXT code that came with the LEGO-NXT system. Current and future efforts with theboat project involve replacing the NXT system with LABQUEST which will be easier interfacewith GPS and Vernier sensors. Similarly, Madison devised anIntroduction to Engineering Design course with outcomes for students such as: carry out a basicdesign process, learn and use skills in a team environment, and develop confidence, amongothers. While some students find these courses very motivating, others still leave for differentreasons [10].Another approach to STEM retention and success was put into action by Grand Valley StateUniversity. The results of this NSF funded S-STEM project have been remarkable, with nearly100% of “at risk” students finishing their degrees in a timely manner. (ENGR101), was specifically designed and offered during the fall quarter of the 2015-16 school year asa part of a NSF S-STEM grant, Program for Engineering Excellence for Partner Schools(PEEPS). PEEPS is a cohort scholarship program that provides engineering students withfinancial, academic, and social support3.
