undergraduate research experiences[10].In a 2004 three-year study, researchers interviewed 76 students, mostly rising seniors in eightscience disciplines across four small private STEM-serving institutions [11]. They conductedthree interviews: two before graduation and the third post-graduation. For students who hadcompleted an undergraduate research experience, 91% of them reported gains after graduating.Gains were based on a checklist of possible faculty-defined benefits derived from literature.There were seven different kinds of gains including: personal/professional, thinking and workinglike a scientist, and gains in various skills. Many of these middle school and high school students passively eliminatetechnical career options by not choosing courses that are not needed for these STEM fields9. Inmany cases, students who pursue STEM courses have made these career decisions before theyfinish high school so that STEM career exploration summer programs before their senior year, orbefore they start college may be too late. We also explored if being active in engineering clubs orprograms for women and/or minority students played a role in their career planning. Whenwomen and underrepresented minority students actively participated in these types ofengineering clubs or programs, they were, indeed, more likely to plan to work in engineering, butthey were also more likely to expect to focus on management or sales rather than on becomingpracticing engineers. University Dr. Marjorie Shavers is an assistant professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in Counseling at Hei- delberg University. She has a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Ohio State University and is currently licensed as a professional school and professional clinical counselor with supervision designation. Dr. Shavers’s research agenda focuses on exploring how educational systems and professionals impact the experiences and overall mental health of students, particularly Black women. Dr. Shavers’s most recent work focuses particularly on the experiences of Black women pursuing doctorates and post–doctorates in computer science and engineering. ). For the fall 2009 cohort, the mean physics GPA was 2.50 (number of courses =10). It should be noted that two students in this cohort received “F’s” in PHYS 1100, and onestudent enrolled in the PHYS 2102 course, earned an “A”.Engineering Residential College (ERC)Ten of the 22 freshmen 2008 S-STEM scholars were housed in the ERC, a residence hall forfreshmen engineering students. ERC students are required to take three of the designated ERCcourses in math, physics, chemistry or English. Several faculty members instructing thesedesignated courses have participated in the NSF STEP supported Faculty DevelopmentWorkshops and Learning Communities.
