undergraduate research experiences[10].In a 2004 three-year study, researchers interviewed 76 students, mostly rising seniors in eightscience disciplines across four small private STEM-serving institutions [11]. They conductedthree interviews: two before graduation and the third post-graduation. For students who hadcompleted an undergraduate research experience, 91% of them reported gains after graduating.Gains were based on a checklist of possible faculty-defined benefits derived from literature.There were seven different kinds of gains including: personal/professional, thinking and workinglike a scientist, and gains in various skills. University Dr. Marjorie Shavers is an assistant professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in Counseling at Hei- delberg University. She has a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Ohio State University and is currently licensed as a professional school and professional clinical counselor with supervision designation. Dr. Shavers’s research agenda focuses on exploring how educational systems and professionals impact the experiences and overall mental health of students, particularly Black women. Awealth of untapped intellectual and economic potential exists among historicallyunderrepresented racial/ethnic groups – including Blacks and Latinos – who have not hadequitable access to engineering and related STEM fields. For Blacks and Latinos who areaccepted into engineering and related STEM fields, they face a number of barriers to theirsuccess which lead to low retention and graduation rates. In historically male-dominated fieldssuch as engineering and related STEM disciplines, Black and Latino men have remainedunderrepresented at the student and faculty ranks. et al., [5] performed an exploratory on a non-traditional first year college student’sexperiences with messaging about engineering by an administrator, engineering faculty, and anacademic advisor. Their ethnographic research revealed tensions between the career goals of thestudent and the prioritization of national economic strength, an emphasis on quantitative andtechnical aspects of engineering practice over social or qualitative aspects, and a focus on theimportance of producing a large number of engineers to bolster the workforce over theeducational goals of the students. The messaging is created and reinforced by individuals atdifferent levels of the university system. This work underscores the need for criticalintrospection by
