Morgan State University (MSU) is the only Historically Black College and University(HBCU) offering a structured program in RF (radio frequency) and microwaves at theundergraduate level. Within this program, RF/microwave courses are offered as senior electiveswithin the Electrical Engineering curriculum. However, these courses suffered low enrollment,poor retention and minimal student engagement. In this case, the student took a 3 credit course indata communications, and the goals for the undergraduate research were closely alignedwith the topics that the student was learning in that class. The project focused on Fourieranalysis of periodic signals and its applications to data communications. independent investigators. With this project, two courseshave been developed for undergraduate research that has impacted about 80 students. Four ofthese students went to work as mentors to 48 high school girls and boys at a MechanicalEngineering Summer Camp. During the 6-day camp, students were introduced to ME as a careerand were also exposed to laboratory activities in diverse areas. Finally, the goals of the thirdproject are to develop a Spanish version of the statics concept inventory (CATS) and todetermine if bilingual students exhibit the same misconceptions as those identified in CATS.This study has broadened the participation of underrepresented groups in two ways: 100% of theparticipants are Hispanic students, something that hasn’t occurred

attempt to get the new and at risk students to mingle with mature students and facultywithout enrolling them in a "special" program. The program's key objective is to get students toteach each other with mentors available to intervene only when necessary. In the Fall 2011 term,the project was started with virtually no funding. Laboratory space that was only being used20% of the time was made available to students to study in during the unused 80% of the classschedule.The motivation for this program and its objectives are discussed.
