However, no data on the career self-efficacy of engineers in the workplace exists.During this study, career self-efficacy of black engineers was measured using an adapted 25-question Career Decision Self-efficacy Short Form2 (CDSE-SF) instrument, assessing careerself-efficacy subscales of self-appraisal, occupational information gathering, goal setting,planning, and problem solving. The results of a survey of 131 black engineers in a largegovernment engineering organization indicate that the career self-efficacy of black engineers ishigh. significantly related to persistence. Their research showed reliableimprovement in persistence (p < 0.05) when motivation was included as a factor. Vogt et al. (28)measured self-variables including academic self-confidence and self-efficacy, as well as otherenvironmental and behavior variables to learn what influences a student’s academic achievement.They found that academic achievement was influenced by self-efficacy (p <= 0.01) and academicself-confidence (p <= 0.01). The results of these studies lead to a common conclusion. Self-regulation is essential inthe persistence of not only underrepresented minority students in engineering, but also allstudents. 2013 iteration of the GI program.4.1 Survey ResultsPre-camp and post-camp surveys were used to examine the impact of the camp. In both surveys,campers were asked to answer questions to measure computer science self-efficacy and to evaluate theiropinions of computer science careers. Computer self-efficacy questions required the campers to rate, ona seven-point likert scale (1 – strongly disagree, 7 – strongly agree), statements such as, “If I get stuck onthe computer, I can get it working again ” and “I find working with computers very easy”. To gage theirthoughts on computer science careers we asked questions such as “Would you want a career in computerscience?” and “What does a typical computer scientist look like?”. Here, we report on

Steele and Aronson’s5 work on stereotype threat supports the notionthat knowledge of negative stereotypes about the achievement of Blacks can, in turn, lower thatachievement. Steele and Aronson found that when Black students were tasked with completing astandardized test that they were told measured intelligence, they consistently scored significantlylower than their White American counterparts.
