Questions 10 and 12 on the P.E.S. ask, “How muchmath do you plan to take in high school,” and “How much physics do you plan to take in highschool,” respectively. In spring 2009, the number of mentees planning on taking a greaternumber of years of math and physics increased from the initial survey to the final survey, whilethe number planning on taking the minimum number of years of math and physics dropped. The Open House will have tours of the research labs,hands-on activities, and informational sessions about undergraduate and graduate opportunitiesand STEM careers.Many studies have also stressed the importance of role models and mentors.4,5 During thesecond year of our program we actively sought out women and Hispanic graduate students toserve as role models. Advisement and Mentoring Program, a faculty member from each STEMdepartment participates as a STEM Faculty Mentor. The Faculty Mentor intervenes by advisingstudents who are at-risk of failing Calculus and discusses the consequences in the student’sdegree plan if the student fails/drops Calculus since this math course is the foundation foradditional STEM courses and a prerequisite for subsequent STEM courses. The STEM FacultyMentors also give two presentations on the Applications of Calculus during the semester. Four years ago, the program recognized the teachers’ need for assistancewith the economically disadvantaged students and pledged to help. In 2006, the programwas new to the process and did not act quickly enough to help more than two students.However, much was learned and we were able to plan earlier for 2007 when wesuccessfully helped 12 students.
