contributions to a multi-disciplinary project wasimplemented in the spring of 2012. The chosen project was a hydroelectric generation project inwhich the ME students designed a waterwheel to work in a laboratory flume, the ECE studentsdesigned a permanent-magnet generator with wireless monitoring, and the CEE studentsdesigned a structure to support the wheel and generator. Throughout the course of the projectstudents designed their respective components and communicated with others among the variousdisciplines to define design interface requirements. The first year of the project was successful inthat the student teams were able to design working components that functioned together in asystem to generate electricity. That design experience and several

projects are appropriate to run as full-fledged interdepartmental multi-discipline efforts, the course coordinators must use their judgment, and be somewhat selective.Collaborations with Non-Engineering Departments Over the years, a number of Senior Design projects at our College have also involvedcollaborations with departments outside of the engineering school, thereby further extending themultidisciplinary reach and scope of our program. For example, for the last three years, two of our departments (ECE and ME) haveengaged in a partnership with Florida State’s department of Earth, Ocean & AtmosphericSciences department, and two of its associated research laboratories, to have teams of ourengineering students develop various new

was the sum of these aspects. This was confirmed when studying the correlation of the 2D grades assigned in each subject withthe overall final grades in each subject. In the systems course, the correlation was 44%, and in Page 24.763.15the thermodynamics course the correlation was 30%, which is about what one would expectbetween hands on laboratory grades and overall subject matter grades. When each subjectcourse grades a 2D project alone on the subject matter contribution to 2D, then those grades willnot correlate, and do not grade the multidisciplinary nature of the 2D

Students demanded places tostore, build and test their projects as well as the machines and tools essential to building them.None of this was provided for, since only the traditional laboratory facilities for demonstrationsand small experiments were in place.3.4 The other departmentsAs the first projects began to be implemented, coordinators of other disciplines found themselvesin an uncomfortable position

As a result, the Museum was to become a dynamic space; a laboratory for learningand a venue for the synthesis of art and engineering.Following two years of intensive planning and effort, the Grohmann Museum opened in Octoberof 2007 as the newest and arguably the finest Museum in Milwaukee, in addition to being to only Page 24.784.3Museum of its type in the world. permeability of traditional disciplinary boundaries. All fourengineering departments at our institution offer a large number of laboratory-style courses inwhich students gain hands-on problem solving and design experience; retaining this focus was apriority. As mentioned above, the Engineering Studies program administers the Bachelor of Arts inEngineering degree. The faculty of Lafayette College established the degree in 1970 with thegoal of producing graduates who could bridge the gap between engineering and the liberal arts. The mission of the program is: To provide a rigorous liberal arts curriculum built on an engineering foundation that prepares graduates to effectively address society’s increasingly complex challenges.
