. Specifically, two of the authors sought toconduct research related to the development and assessment of augmented reality as aninstructional technology to improve student learning. Understanding the many facets ofconducting research on instructional technologies was best suited to a cohesive training program.Therefore, the primary author chose to complete a 6-month continuing education program inInstructional Design and Technology at his home institution. the fall of 2021 we formed a community of practice (CoP) for lab and designinstructors at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign [9]. While building this CoP, weleveraged the Networked Improvement Communities (NICs) framework to facilitate members(instructors) from different contexts (departments, class sizes, student levels) collaborating ondeveloping best practices across all courses toward a shared goal: improving college lab courseexperiences for instructors and students. The NICs are both learning and design communitiesgrounded in the idea of “learning through doing” [10].
