current students and staff. Forexample, telecounseling is one means of facilitating the interaction among incoming students, current students and nuclear engineering staff. Prior to or during new student orientation, students interact with the department’s freshman student adviser and student ambassadors. It isan opportunity for incoming students, and parents, to become familiar with the department, itsservices, facilities, research projects and career trends. In conjunction with the College ofEngineering orientation program, the department engages in its own orientation to satisfy theseobjectives. As important is the introduction of students to the professional society, the AmericanNuclear Society. Freshman students join the student chapter for

unique assessment tool called theIntegrated Technology Assessment. TAC of ABET provides a strong incentive forOutcomes based Assessment and the accreditation process has helped inform andimprove the concepts to the continuing benefit of the program and the individual student. The ChallengeThe typical undergraduate college student enters college straight out of high school, attends for four years, graduates, and then begins his or her professional career. Suchstudents are increasingly being displaced by those with more complicated life historiesthat may make it difficult for them to realize their full potential in a traditional learningenvironment. One of the major challenges for colleges in the twenty-first century is toprovide the kind of support

as part of their mission to prevent and track such events. In the 1990’sthe Department of Energy set up the Radiochemistry Research Award Program (REAP)to help universities develop more active educational and research opportunities in a widevariety of areas. In August 2005, the Nuclear and Radiation Engineering Program at theUniversity of Texas received its second three-year REAP grant largely due to the successof both traditional radiochemistry and more advanced nuclear chemistry teaching andresearch. Increased interactions with national laboratories, placement of students inradiochemistry careers, and significant pedagogical improvements all contributed to thesecond REAP award.Educational ActivitiesThe cornerstone of the educational

science andtechnology.1 Both organizers and participants agree that the 2005 WNU SummerInstitute served that purpose quite well. However, the success of the Institute will betruly realized as the Fellows progress in their careers and make decisions that shape thefuture nuclear industry. Admiral John Grossenbacher, Director of the Idaho NationalLaboratory, stated it quite succinctly when addressing the Institute Fellows, “Don’tunderestimate the effect you can have as individuals. We’re looking for new leaders. Ifyou don’t do it, who will?”Bibliography: 1. Responsive As in MR above and presents multiple examples of coursework and clear evidence of applications to the discipline, job, hobby, or later courses HR Highly As in R above and presents many detailed examples Responsive of coursework and applications in career or other activitiesIt has been observed from the experience of implementing this grading system that there appearsto be a tendency for students to be satisfied with MR grade. Furthermore, since MR is a passinggrade and being a qualitative in nature it does not affect the students’ grade point average. Therefore, they do not feel encouraged to exert more
