. As such,we shifted from a single university focus to a collaborative program, then two-programapproach. We look forward to the impact this program will have on the region through thisapproach. These changes influenced our change to a Work In Progress. The Role of Summer Camps in Promoting STEM EducationSummer camps are attended by millions of students K-12 each year. Summer camps serve anumber of purposes from childcare needs, reduction of “summer slide” or learning loss over thecourse of time that schools are not in session, as well as exposing students to topics that are notcovered fully within the curriculum of the traditional school year. Beyond these areas, summercamps offer students the opportunity to develop soft skills such as

The students canexperience career opportunities, develop soft skills, and broaden their STEM skills while earningan education stipend and building a competitive Curriculum Vitae [4]-[6], [10]. All studentshighlight their final research in poster and presentation format at the End of the SummerShowcase and submit a research abstract to the AEOP to be published in the AEOP ResearchJournal [21], [23].Summer Camps Continued LearningEvery summer, the GEMS camp is held for all high school students who are interested inpursuing a STEM-related field with a concentration in engineering and computer science [1], [2].This camp is conducted in collaboration with AEOP

about the ways I try to step in instead of letting them discover.” Additionally, teachers shared their regrets in regard to challenging their students from thebeginning due to their hesitation that their students wouldn’t be able to do some of the morechallenging activities with one teacher sharing, “I just regret not like trying things that theyprobably, maybe or maybe not would have done.” Along with the activities, there was skepticism on some of the soft skills involved withthe habits of mind. One of the skills that teachers shared that they lacked confidence in was theirstudents’ ability and willingness to work in teams. However, they did start to see this skillprogress in some of their students throughout the engineering

and internet services. Overall, it remains a voluntary project that evolvesand grows based on the time and resources available. 2. Literature Review2.1 Project-Based Learning (PBL)Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogical approach that involves learners in real-world problem-solving tasks. PBL has proven effective in enhancing technical and soft skills, fosteringdeeper understanding, and promoting intrinsic motivation [1]. Key elements of successful PBL includecentrality, collaboration, and constructive investigations, all of which are integral to the program’sdesign. Studies highlight that PBL can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practicalapplication, particularly in STEM education [2].Key Attributes
