The community partners not only partake in creating a ‘consumer’ that satisfies thedesign process, but the children are also involved with a hands-on STEM-related project thatthey have had a large impact on its development. camps started.ResultsOnly two researchers received the opportunity to participate in this program, and unfortunately,this left us with an objectively small sample size. Other engineering students were spoken to in apublic setting, both former and current, on the potential benefits of the program.Both participants reported using skills learned during the program during their followingsemester at the university: Their 50 hours of coding experience was used to help sort data andconstruct graphs for classes. Their CAD experience came into play when they were able tomodel problems in an online space to assist in solving them. Their project oriented mind set gavethem an edge with planning and completing all assignments and projects on time

Thestudents then learned how to use a commercial ECG sensor,allowing them to compare the mechanical measurements fromtheir own sensor and the electrical measurements from thecommercial ECG sensor.Final Engineering LabThe final assessment of the cardiovascular unit was for studentsworking in groups to create and test a hypothesis relating tomeasuring cardiovascular activity. The students worked ingroups of two to three and took data with their pulse meter anda commercial ECG. One student group compared baselinecardiovascular activity to activity after hearing a text tone,watching a scary movie, or listening to chewing noises bygraphing the ECG readings measured.
