, I worked for NASA at a Satellite Tracking Station in Ecuador Subsequently I obtained my M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. My Ph.D. dissertation work (on Neural Networks applied to control systems and automation) went to the DOD in Virginia. My formal grad- uate academic training was in Control Systems, Telecommunications and Applied Mathematics. After receiving my Masters and Ph.D. degrees in EE, I joined AT&T Bell Laboratories. During my tenure at Bell Labs, I became skilled in the formal methodology and processes of Systems Engineering and Sys- tems Architecture applied to large systems. Lafayette (College of Engineering) Dr. Karen Marais’ educational research focuses on improving systems engineering education. She is the author of several technical publications, including 17 journal papers and two book chapters. She received an NSF CAREER award in 2014. Dr. Marais has worked in engineering for two decades, first in industry and then in academia. She holds a B. Eng. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Stellenbosch, a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of South Africa, and an S.M and Ph.D. from the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2019 Assessment of Project-Based
