In this paper, the educational tools used and their role in achieving these goals areassessed and discussed. These tools are assessed through faculty observations, enrolmentmonitoring, and feedback from internship supervisors. The results show increased studentenrolment in the program and improvement of students problem-solving, teamwork,communication, and thinking skills, as well as reinforcing theoretical concepts. programs have not given muchrecent consideration to the appropriateness of this requirement. While there has been muchdiscussion of other aspects of engineering education, including the incorporation into thecurriculum of more “soft-skills”, class delivery modes, and capstone design project requirements,there has not been much discussion of the appropriate role for technical electives. This issomewhat surprising considering the desire of many programs and universities to reduce thenumber of credits required for an engineering degree in an effort to increase graduation rates,reduce time-to-graduation, and decrease student debt loads.
