In this offering format, a program isstill able to teach the material that is deemed necessary for students to learn before they graduate,but allows students to apply that knowledge in particular applications that are of the most interestto them. For example, suppose that a program wishes to teach students how to design laboratoryexperiments. The program could teach this in one particular laboratory course. Or the programcould offer two or three laboratory courses that focus on different particular subdisciplines in thefield, and teach students in each of these courses how to design experiments. By requiring thatstudents take at least one of these elective courses, the program guarantees that the students

Case studies may be a productive direction in which to begin. It could be useful to examine what case studies might be suitable for teaching in this area [1]. 5. Develop new dissemination approaches. Developing literature accessible to both the public and educators should be a priority. There is a need for more widespread promotion of the division’s work.
