Indian/AlaskaNatives 0.3%, multi-racial 9.5%, unknown 4.9%.6At Cañada College, the discrepancy in the levels of preparation among different ethnicities ismanifested in student persistence. During a recent planning initiative led by the College President,a cohort study of newly enrolling students at Cañada was performed. Table 1 shows a summaryof one-year and two-year persistence rates of students by ethnicity. Among Hispanic students theone-year persistence rate was 59.4%, and the two-year persistence rate was 28.8%. The one-yearpersistence rate of African American students was 46.7%, and the two-year rate 20%, significantlylower than those of white students whose one-year and two-year persistence rates were 72.5% and54.4%, respectively. foundation of effectivetransition. The Peer Led Team Learning sessions were an effective way to engage large numbersof students with in-depth course material within a group work environment. While all of theseprograms had positive impacts on transition and retention, Portfolio Tracking and 2+2consortium had the most impact among others. This paper will discuss those program designs, implementation plans, and effectiveness of those programs with program data and analysis. Page 23.251.2IntroductionAs the nation prepares to meet President Obama’s goal of eight million new college graduates by2020, the transfer process - the pathway between community colleges and universities -will takeon an increasingly vital role1. dependent children in their household, and asks to list anyother extracurricular activities or obligations. The object of this writing is to discuss preliminaryresults from the first semester’s data collection. Results and Discussion:One of the issues encountered with this study is that there are only small numbers of studentsthat start at UW - Rock and then transfer to UW - Platteville for a mechanical engineeringdegree. For example, from the various groups, data was collected from 39 senior students, 70juniors, and 20 freshmen. The freshmen were all enrolled at UW - Rock. Six of these studentsindicate plans to continue on to UW - Platteville and pursue an engineering degree. Of the 70juniors surveyed, all but twelve were at UW - Platteville’s main

For most colleges, the majority of campus information is publishedonline and prospective students are directed toward web sites for degree plans, course schedules, and online applications. Consequently, pre-existing skills and computer access are oftenexpected as individuals proceed through the admissions process to obtain campus informationand enroll for classes. Ironically, some university administrators feel that students obtain such ahigh level of

programs to first-year college students than totransfer students. Wickert’s13 qualitative study of 16 transfer students showed that orientationwas only marginally useful for imparting information to students, as did Jacob, Busby andLeath’s14 study. A predominant theme, then, regarding transfer student orientation, is thattransfer students are often an “afterthought” when planning for orientation (p. 71).15In the context of two-year colleges, academic advisors play a key role in maintaining students’motivation and educational interest in transferring to a four-year institution. Providing accurateand timely information to students about academic credits, progress toward degree, and academicexpectations for the receiving institution is essential for

Our future qualitative analysis will allow us to explore this Page 23.39.12relationship in more depth. Finally, the students in our sample show moderate evidence of GPA shock. Fifty percent of thosesurveyed experienced a decline in their GPA using our broad measurement categories. However, many of the students in the sample remained in the same GPA bracket, demonstrating at leastthat their academic transition, as measured by GPA, was somewhat smooth. Additionally, only6% reported transfer ecstasy, or an increase in GPA from the sending institution to the receivinginstitution
