initiative and translate her passion for STEM into opportunities that will attract, inspire and retain more girls in STEM to make it the new norm. She has also architected SFAz’s enhanced Community College STEM Pathways Guide that has received the national STEMx seal of approval for STEM tools. She integrated the STEM Pathways Guide with the KickStarter processes for improving competitive proposal writing of Community College Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and is currently a co-PI on the HSI ATE Resource Hub. Throughout her career, Ms. Pickering has written robotics software, diagnostic expert systems for space station, manufacturing equipment models, and architected complex IT systems for global collaboration

Several students reported improvedcommunication skills in the context of the research they participated in, particularly throughreading, writing, and vetting of ideas through discussion.Seven of the nine participants mentioned reading peer reviewed journals. attend graduate school after degree completion. REU participants werematched with a Principal Investigator (PI), Graduate Mentor, and a project. The Graduate Mentorworked closely with the student by providing deadlines and expectations from the researchproject.The Education and Workforce team led students in weekly sessions, such as technical writing,conducting a perfect pitch, writing a literature review, and presenting a research poster. Inaddition, two electrical engineering Ph.D. students led weekly technical labs and seminars onskills needed in engineering, such as SolidWorks, systems-level electronics, and Arduino. Centerwith a planetarium and rooftop star deck and observatory. Students volunteer to operate thetelescopes for the public on Friday nights. The professional development workshops includeresume writing, creating a LinkedIn profile, club officers’ retreat, e-portfolios, scholarship essays,transfer tips and research paper sessions. In 2017, 98 students participated in these workshops; in2018, 94 students participated. Because families think the students spend an inordinate amount oftime at the MESA Center, Family Night was implemented to share some of the projects in a fun,engaging and interactive environment. Another highlight for 2018 was the center’s visit byCongressman Joaquin Castro, who wanted to learn more about the undergraduate
