perceived group roles in the context of first-year engineering courses, weexplored female students’ learning experience in a group project setting in this work-in-progress using Benne and Sheats’ functional roles model. Based on our qualitativedata, we found that female students performed a range of roles in the group project. Inthe dimension of task roles, female students usually took the roles of assistants, opiniongiver, coordinators and initiator-managers. In the dimension of social roles, femalesserved as harmonizers, followers or gatekeepers. As to the dimension of individual roles,some female students self-reported the feeling of being an outsider in working with aproject group. Suggestions were proposed to promote engineering curriculum

universities, where the researchers asked participants aboutproblems they encountered during their engineering curriculum and to comment on problemscenarios. Findings suggest that students often lack resources for effectively solving teamproblems, though “high achieving” students, defined as having a self-reported GPA of 3.5 orabove, are often more proactive when dealing with slacker teammates, using strategies such assetting early deadlines or selecting teammates known also to be high achievers. to serve as teaching assistants. Teaching assistants at Dartmouth are typicallyundergraduate students themselves who have done well in the courses for which they serve asteaching assistants. Responsibilities of the teaching assistants include running problem sessions(optional evening help sessions), grading problem sets, and helping to set up and rundemonstrations and laboratories. Teaching assistants are not responsible for grading quizzes,exams or projects. This leadership structure required that a new project manager be trainedeach year and occasionally the learning curve was fairly steep. first-year projects courses were beneficial in helping students understand thepotential for engineering to positively impact people’s lives. Of the students who indicated thattheir primary reason for selecting an engineering major was to help people, 50% persisted in CE,AE, or EvE disciplines, 11% transferred to other engineering disciplines, and 39% transferred tonon-engineering disciplines. These students cited multiple reasons for plans to transfer out ofengineering. Most of the students motivated to a career where they could help people maintainedthis vision for non-engineering disciplines. teamsAbstractWomen in masculine fields such as engineering often face a paradox when it comes tointerpersonal communication: if they speak like a woman they may be perceived as weak oremotional, but if they speak and act like a man they may be perceived as difficult to work with.This project attempts to uncover the tacit knowledge that successful engineering women haveaccumulated about communicating successfully as an engineer so that we can pass thisknowledge down to students. Discourse completion interviews with 23 female engineeringprofessionals and 19 female undergraduates asked participants to identify how they wouldrespond to situations where a teammate is dominating a project. We find that while students tendto either avoid conflict or correct
