CommunityBackgroundThe need for STEM graduates in the United States is growing at an alarming rate. A 2012President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) report predicted that therewill be a 1 million college student deficit in science, technology, engineering, and mathematicsover the next 10 years (Olson & Riordan, 2012). For years now, there has been a call for moreunderrepresented groups in STEM fields. According to the National Center for EducationStatistics (NCES), only 18.4% of the students earning engineering degrees in the year 2014 werefemales (Digest of Education Statistics, 2015).
