’ Perceptions of Belonging through the Lens of Social IdentityAbstractResearch shows that students who feel that they belong in an engineering department are morelikely to develop a strong engineering identity and become situated in the engineeringcommunity. Strayhorn [7] defines sense ofbelonging as “students’ perceived social support on campus, a feeling or sensation ofconnectedness, and the experience of mattering or feeling cared about, accepted, respected,valued by, and important to the campus community” (p. 5). The research-informed interventionsintegrated into the Building Pathways program model are designed to cultivate students’ sense ofbelonging.Beyond a sense of belonging in engineering education, belongingness in the engineeringprofession is often referred to as engineering identity. Recognizing oneself as an engineer
