He was a visiting scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Lincoln Laboratory. He co-authored two textbooks on microcontrollers and embedded systems and authored over 70 journal and conference papers. This collaboration began in the spring of 2003 with the laboratory for theMaterials Science course and now exists in the senior capstone design courses.For the Materials Science with Laboratory course, a supplemental COM course was offered inparallel to the lab in order to help students write and edit their lab reports. The mixed-methods evaluation methodology includes correlation ofresponses with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality types of theparticipants, which is used in the institute to help form design teams. Data for the 2010institute were collected using the same instrument employed in the 2004 institute,allowing a longitudinal analysis of the effects of changes to the institute. The analysisindicates that the modifications to PDI have had meaningful impacts across MBTIpersonality types. The teachers, on average and across the all MBTI types, mostly agreedor totally agreed that the instruction and laboratory aspects of the PDI were relevant tothem each day. relatively rare in engineering courses and is almost non-existent in textbooks.Instructors can teach inductively by presenting familiar phenomena, practical issues, orexperimental observations before presenting a general principle. Surprisingly, most textbooksstill use an exclusively deductive approach, proceeding from first principles and governingequations to specific applications.
