The Helixwind turbine wassupplied without a tower but a 20 foot monopole tower was locally manufacturedaccording to Helixwind specifications and used in the installation. All foundations wereeither installed (i.e. poured) as specified in manufacturer drawings or installed accordingto revised drawings contracted through a local engineering design firm. The nature of theproject (State of Minnesota funding) required State registered engineering certification ofall foundations. This was accomplished via local subcontract. equipment. Traditional undergraduate coursework and standardcapstone design courses do not normally provide student experiences with these types ofproblems. In the two-semester, capstone design course in chemical engineering at West VirginiaUniversity, a three-part case study is used to develop skills in solving process performanceproblems leading up to the typical process design problem. The production of ally1 chloridediscussed here is an example of such a case study. In the first step, the production in a portion ofthe process must be increased.
