For example, when a participant described studentsobtaining professional skills through their participation in a student organization, the responsewas coded as “development of professional skills in student organization”. In the third phase, theresearcher grouped codes with similar meanings to understand the emergent patterns and nuancesin the data. Thematic analysis helped the researcher identify three themes and gain a deeperunderstanding of faculty members’ prevalent perceptions of student career preparation for eachskill. If no alternate time could be scheduled, the student would bethanked for their time but no interview would occur. Students were informed of this plan (and itsreasoning) both in writing and verbally before they signed up. Cech found that the need to meet accreditation requirements and be considered,“legitimate purveyors of knowledge” [10, p. 64] can put pressure on even the most ethically andpedagogically innovative of schools to fall into the same culture of disengagement. : Figure 5 shows that students who received an A used resubmissionless often than their peers (averaged 0.89 resubmissions per assignment), with those receiving a Chaving the largest number of resubmissions (averaging 1.27 resubmissions). The students whoreceived Fs had very few resubmissions, but they also had very few initial submissions. Thesample size is not high enough to gain deeper statistical insight; however, from the facultyobservation, resubmissions for those students who received an A were typically simple fixeswhile the resubmissions for the students who received a C were often much more involved,requiring more work on both the part of the instructor and student. UsefulnessPerceptions of usefulness often revealed shortcomings of online teaching in that it removedhelpful measures, such as being reminded of due dates during in-person classes. Several of theauthors noted that while cameras were an inherently useful tool for online learning, they feltuncomfortable trying to enforce their use. engineering education is directed towards teaching empathy as askill, Astin [24] conducted a comprehensive study to understand how the college experienceaffects students and, in particular, how faculty characteristics affect the experience of students.The study included 34 measures related to faculty characteristics, including type of teachingmethods, level of altruism, values, morals, and student orientation. Astin found that high researchorientation of faculty members had negative impact on student satisfaction. He found that thestudent orientation of faculty members had a number of positive effects on academic outcomessuch as degree attainment, self-reported growth in writing skills, critical thinking abilities,analytical and problem-solving
