The fact that the quiz can be played through a cell phone increases students’engagement, since the use of new technological resources motivates students and shortenssome distances between faculty members and students. A study using identity as an lens established a framework foranalyzing the factors that affect science identity: students build competency with valuedpractices in the field when they have authentic opportunities for the performance of thesepractices, and when they feel recognized for their contributions – that is, “recognition for whatmatters, by people that matter” [27]. This decision resulted in an incredibly harmful outcome forMathiae, who expressed a great deal of concern for incoming mathematics students who mightshare a similar identity to zir. Ze also mentioned that the decision to leave mathematics had anadverse effect on zirs relationship with zirs family, who strongly desired for Mathiae to pursue aSTEM degree. The culmination of trauma that ensued from this incident exacerbated by theineffective “allyship” displayed by the administration weighed so heavily on Mathiae that zebecame observably upset during our interview.Coping StrategiesNavigating power structures within the STEM institution had an adverse effect on theparticipants’ mental health. program’s location began with an existing collaboration at thefaculty member’s previous home institution, and it made sense to retain this location not onlybecause the faculty member is now exceedingly familiar with the city and has plenty of helpfulcontacts there but also because the larger Munich area has a robust bioengineering industry andacademic presence (e.g., Biogen GmbH, the Munich Institute of Biomedical Engineering), whichproves useful for participating students’ degree work and future career plans.
