-programming course at the University of Pittsburgh atJohnstown was made for the Fall 2012 semester. It was done with ample caution and care so as not tooverload students having to learn MATLAB in addition to the already established work load in Cprogramming. Learning C cannot be scaled back due to its necessity and this being the only formalprogramming course in the EET program. As the student survey indicated, the two competingprogramming tools were balanced right and this experiment will encourage the continuation of thispractice by the author. In the future, author plans to explore the possibility of using MATLAB toproduce C-code for sample programs done by students, interaction between DevC/C++ andMATLAB in terms of MATLAB invoking C functions

Zuheir. Zuheir has been invaluable to our project of creating a value stream map over our 3 major processes. Originally I planned to complete 2 of the 3 processes using Zuheir. He took direction well, understood the scope of what we were trying to do, and tirelessly collected and constructed the data into the desired format. In doing so, we moved into VSM creation of the 3rd process. This was neither unexpected nor was it anticipated initially as part of the scope of work. We also used Zuheir to evaluate some process improvement steps within the Finish portion of our overall process. It was my intent to expose Zuheir to as much I.E./Manufacturing Engineering type work as possible. After a brief

of MaterialsDuring this study, the authors co-taught an undergraduate class in Strength of Materials to acohort of 2nd year mechanical Engineering students. It should be noted that KathmanduUniversity has lockstep programs in each engineering discipline; therefore, students of the sameyear and major will have identical schedules and class meetings. As a result the students are veryfamiliar with their classmates by the end of their first semester on campus and will continue tobuild these relationships during their four years at the university. This is in contrast to most USengineering programs like the home University of the author. The Strength of Materials classconsisted of 60 students. The department’s curricular plan is for the class to
leaveswomen feeling like outsiders. This perception is further exacerbated by the lack of role modelsand mentors to help women themselves as part of the computing community. While many of these causes continue to be problematic, this section offered several opportunitiesthat may be available to the field of computing to increase women’s interest, enrollment, andretention in the field. On a systemic level, we have highlighted the need for better mentorship forcurrent female students and faculty to make them want to stay in the field and become rolemodels to future students. Research also suggests that there needs to be more strategicrecruitment plans that combat the stereotypes of computing and encourage women to participateby supporting current

The simulation is a thermal analysis using the finite element method. There is nostructural analysis. The components are oriented out of plan with each other, not because ofstructural deformation, but because the hot and cold lines in the condenser unit were not parallelto each other and we wanted to avoid putting a mechanical load on the thermoelectric unit. Offline programming is the technique of generating a robotprogram with using a real robot machine. This OLP method presents many advantages over theon-line method (Physically use a robot teach pendent to generate a robot program): (1) robotprograms are generated without interruptions of robot operation, (2) removal of the students fromthe potentially dangerous environment, (3) there is a greater possibility for optimization ofsystem layout and the planning of robot motions. We teach our MET students offlineprogramming software to emulate the robot motions, generate program instructions

shift their focus to a learning mode forthe lecture material after the quiz.To strike a balance between the possible negative impacts of daily quizzing and the potentialpositive impacts of improving student learning by increasing their motivation to keep abreast ofthe course material, the author implemented a student evaluation plan based around 4-6 quizzes asemester, as opposed to 2 large exams, in a Basic Engineering Thermodynamics course. Whilehaving students take a quiz every 2-3 weeks requires the students to keep up with course materialas it is taught, it does not lead to potentially increasing student anxiety levels through dailyquizzing, and provides students with some flexibility in arranging their weekly study schedules.The quizzes
