1 Story-driven Learning in Higher Education: A Systematic Literature Review Abstract Stories have been a pervasive, ubiquitous feature of our lives throughout humanhistory—indeed, storytelling itself is robustly associated with a host of positive benefits,including better mental health (Robertson et al., 2019), increased empathy (Cummings et al.,2022), and a greater sense of belonging (Ritter et al., 2019). As such, storytelling has thepotential to be a powerful tool in a range of settings, including higher education (i.e., story-driven learning). To uncover how story-driven learning has been used in higher education sofar—as well as to discover patterns in pedagogical methods and

The course, Introduction toEngineering, is a 2-credit hour, 14-week course taken in the first (fall) semester by all incomingengineering students across all majors. The course is taught in two identical, large-enrollmentsections of ca. 350 students per section. For the face-to-face (F2F) version of the course, whichhas been offered in a consistent format from 2016-2019, each section met twice weekly for 60minutes of lecture and active learning exercises in a large auditorium. More recent data has shown that for every seven White orAsian students that obtain a Ph.D., only one underrepresented minority student will obtain adoctorate in engineering (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018;Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering: 2019, 2019). Transitioning into the doctorate without having a proper understanding of what it entailscan make the journey unnecessarily difficult (Lovitts, 2001; Weidman, Twale, & Stein, 2001).Students often enter the doctorate, assuming that what made them successful as an undergraduatewill
curriculum more relevant for students, and build connections betweenclassroom and professional learning competencies. This study offers a comparative analysis evaluating the efficacy of using mini-projectsand ePortfolios in a face-to-face learning environment (Fall 2019) and in an online-only learningenvironment (Fall 2020). Participants in the face-to-face Fall 2019 (n = 104) course completed aquestionnaire that evaluated specific engagement constructs. The completed questionnaires wereevaluated using descriptive statistics and factor analysis. Data from the Fall 2020 (n = 64) coursewere evaluated using the same assessment methodology. It is hoped that findings from this workmay contribute to the development of self-directed learning
with no interface to the interactive portions of the course site. The college hosted presentations from Ken Reid (Ohio Northern University) - AmericanSociety of Engineering Education (ASEE) on effective teaching in March 2019. His presentationnoted design of course management sites should model how students use various social mediaapplications and that faculty should review the structure and content of course management sitesto make it engaging. This presentation influenced the revisions to the course management sitetemplate that had been used for the previous four capstone projects.
