compares an innovative approach to teaching an introductory C programming course to atraditional C programming course for electrical engineering students. Students who pass eithercourse must subsequently take a traditional intermediate C programming course. The novel courseutilizes hardware-based projects to motivate students to master language syntax and implement keyprogramming concepts and best practices. non-profit organization called Christ Church Camp (CCC)that served as the primary client for design. The project was to design a neighborhood for those transitioningout of homelessness and into greater self-sufficiency. The design had to fit within a budget determined bygrant money sought by CCC. There were engineering challenges concerning how to build sustainable tinyhomes and use rainwater harvesting to support an urban garden. Student designers also had to learn thebasics of social work and poverty alleviation so that they could design a neighborhood that would buildconfidence and community for homeless individuals.
