, feelings, andbehaviors of first-generation and low-income students in prerequisite and introductoryengineering courses: calculus, physics, and computer science. There were not many of thesestudents; 16.7% of students indicated that they did not have a parent or guardian who hadcompleted a bachelor’s degree or higher, and only 13.2% of students surveyed indicated thatthey had an annual family income of $50,000 or less. After a brief literature review, we willdescribe the participants, materials, and procedure before comparing the readiness, beliefs,achievement, and behaviors of both the first generation college students and low incomestudents to their peers. , students were “challenged to convey scientific information in a different, moreengaging way.” Aiming to engage a reader beyond an instructor or peer encouraged them to, “change[their] writing style and employ more media, such as YouTube videos, in the project.” Furthermore,freedom to organize the module outside the framework of a traditional paper helped students “understanda better chronology to explain sustainability issues.” Overall, The knowledge that the module “could bebeneficial to someone in the future” motivated students to write more freely and create a story.In addition to the self-evaluation form, interviews were conducted to better capture students’ case-writingexperience and learn about their prior exposure to sustainability. ,contract grading is associated with building equity and inclusion [9]. However, not all authorsagree on the merits of contract grading [10].Contract grading has been used more often in writing courses and is notably promoted by AsaoInoue [1,9]. In examining existing literature, there are very few examples of contract grading inengineering courses [11]; no published articles from the United States were found. However,contract grading is especially applicable in process-oriented courses, and it may increase studentaccountability since they know the requirements at the onset of the class.  programs in order to build a community on campus where female students can feel safe and nurtured by their peers, e.g. University of Wisconsin­Madison, University of Michigan   [2,3].  Success was measured by better grades and an overall higher satisfaction with the University.  Currently the situation in Liberia is such that there is no critical mass of female students to create such programs and achieve a sense of community [4]. Organizations like SWE have the potential to provide a critical mass of fellow women engineers for female students, and subsequently increase persistence of women in engineering [5,6].    Moreover, global competence is making its way into engineering education as a necessary skill for today’s engineers [7

alternative method enables students to form their ownteams in a dynamic faculty-guided setting: Students place nametags on their top project posters,speak with other interested students, and move their nametags as needed until each project hadteams with the appropriate size and skillset.Teams formed using these two approaches have completed a full year-long senior design projectexperience. Throughout these experiences, we collected data to help answer our two keyquestions. We used student surveys about the experience and the class, peer feedback on teamdynamics, focus group discussions, and faculty observations. The aims of the coursewere to (1) help undergraduate students who are interested in research connect with facultypartners who are committed to mentoring undergraduates in research, (2) to guide students inreading through papers that introduce the type of research being carried out in a faculty partnerslab, (3) to guide students in drafting a mini-review of 5 papers relevant to that research, (4) toguide students in identifying and writing up a research proposal which they will complete in thelab of the faculty partner.
