initially developed by and associates to explain workplace dynamics [13], [15],[16], [19], [40], [41] and additional research that has demonstrated the utility of this conceptwith respect to postsecondary institutions. We know comparatively little about whichspecific characteristics of postsecondary institutions are associated with women’srepresentation in STEM fields overall (but see [13], [26]), never mind specific STEM fields,such as CS&E. Our approach is also informed by Fox et al.’s [13] recent work, whichsuggests that gendered organizational dynamics and initiatives play out vividly at the sub-unitlevel (college/department/program), depending on the centrality and status of a particular unitwithin the academic institution. grades and demographic information alone is not indicative ofstudent persistence. Achieving an additional 10% accuracy by adding the characteristicspertaining to the freshman year offers further evidence that the first year plays an important rolein students’ ultimate decision to stay with or leave engineering. As can be seen in Appendix M,freshman grades and math class show the highest relative importance. Using these factors aloneas inputs to the PNN provides a 75.9% accuracy of predicting student attrition. These findings demonstrate the importance of the math course(s) taken freshman yearand grades received. Given this insight, great focus should be placed on these variables. Studentsare allowed the planning time needed to integrate their desired course topic and travel destinationas part of their course schedule and are better able to budget for the financial requirements.Historical Program ImplementationThe team developed these courses during a ten-year period through an evolutionary process.First, the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) group sponsored a study abroad tour to France in2007. In 2008, the same group led a study abroad tour to northern Italy (Guzek F, Brockway K,Brockway T, and Guzek, S. 2013). (See Upcraft, et al, 2006.)WPI made project-based learning the core of its academic program in the early 1970’s when itdefined graduation requirements that included two major projects (Grogan, 1988). , we tested our prototype in water. Twodifferent environments were utilized to test the fish including a tub filled with water (Figure 5)and a pond (Figure 6). In the small tub, a pencil was drilled through the head of the fish tostabilize the head and only allow movement to the body and tail. Once the stationary actuationwas validated, the fish was placed into a pond to test its movement. Testing the soft robotic fishin a pond helped gain information on how fast and how far the fish swam, and whether or not thefish could stay afloat. After testing, it was found that the fish swam at a speed of approximately0.09 m/s. Using syringes to control hydraulic actuation led to slowing down the fish’s movementand making it difficult for the fish’s tail
