TechnologyMajor (ENET), a concentration within Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) that focuses on electricalenergy and power systems. As part of this degree program, a gateway course will be required for all EETsophomores that is designed to recruit into the ENET major, to serve as an introduction to AC systemsanalysis, and to explain electric energy and power systems in a systems context. This course wasdesigned specifically with the IEEE mandate in mind, and great importance was placed on meeting theprogram characteristics described above. 2016. This is after a 9.9% tuition increase in 2012-2013. Withcuts to financing programs and other federal grants, the burden of paying for college may detereconomically disadvantaged URMs from going to college or graduating from college. The effects of the budget cuts and tuition increases can be seen in the decrease in enrollmentat HBCUs. Of the eleven HBCUs in NC, only three saw enrollment percentage increases in full-time students, while seven saw double digit decreases from 2010-2013. Smaller colleges anduniversities such as HBCUs and UNCP, which are URM dominated, have smaller endowmentsand depend heavily on tuition dollars and government funding to continue operations.C. results, it can be concluded that offeringa thematic section of a course can be a good way to get students interested in the course content,to bring in projects that have a common theme and to help develop the students’ entrepreneurialmindset. Slight modification of the course, including developing thematic homework andprojects and adjusting the schedule to accommodate additional content are required, but canprovide benefits to the students as well as the instructor.Bibliography1. . 17, 18. The robotics competition andscience fair sponsored by the Latino-STEM Alliance (LSA) addresses this shortcoming and isdescribed in this paper. The Latino STEM Alliance was founded in 2010 by three Latino engineers Raul Porras,Roman Jaquez and Reinier Moquete who were stunned by the paucity of engineers of color intheir work, and desired to encourage young people of color to study engineering.
