training inthe Midwest region, which is heavily dependent on manufacturing, have led to the proposal toestablish a photonics education center in the Midwest.A group of stakeholders including 16 photonics industry representatives, five educators, and twoOP-TEC representatives originally met in 2010 and formed a Midwest photonics cluster. As aresult of this meeting, new partnerships were formed and plans were made to move forward withthe pursuit of a regional center. In 2011, a planning grant (NSF Award #1104083) was receivedand utilized to develop the foundation for the creation of the Midwest Photonics EducationCenter (MPEC).
