did not have the background to know what STEM careers and fields even existed.Internships were immediately brought into the discussion but Dr. Berrett argued that studentswere not ready for internships. They needed a more closely monitored and supportiveenvironment. He promoted creating a Mentorship experience with a small group of students tosend them to the main Utah State University campus in Logan, Utah, to work side-by-side withexperts in STEM laboratory settings. Rather than leaving mentorships to chance or to individualstudents, he wanted to formalize the process. For American Indians and many minority groups, they do not have the confidence or contacts to make this important connection.THE MENTORSHIP PROJECT:To further students

,courses, seminars, and other educational aids like laboratories. In addition, a “design center” wasrecreated with adequate office space to accommodate the students in a real industrial setting. Anatmosphere of hard work and collaboration among students was created. Energy Engineering and Energy Efficiency were finally the selected research areas. Allpartner companies agreed that under this umbrella they were able to accommodate manydifferent engineering projects, ranging from those heavily oriented to electrical power systemsanalysis in presence of large nonlinear loads, like Electrical Arc Furnaces for the steel makingindustry, to combustion in large steam power plants. Design of new electrical devices, electronics converters

Hiring new facultyand faculty assistants, who can serve as project managers to oversee the Internship and SeniorDesign, has been requested but budget cuts imposed by the State on the university has hinderedthe effort. One positive development is that the university has secured funding to plan a newengineering and science facility to increase instructional and laboratory spaces.5. Concluding RemarksThe Quad Cities metropolitan area has an economy based around heavy manufacturing and astrong historical tie to engineering firms. The School of Engineering has become a valuableresource for providing education and new ideas

For instance, and in order to attract and support industrypartners that fit the right profile, NYIT has submitted an application to StartUpNY.10 This New York State program targets businesses whose mission align well withthe host university’s research agenda. Through the program, New York offers new andexpanding businesses the opportunity to operate tax-free for 10 years on eligibleuniversity or college campuses throughout the State. Participants partnering withuniversities also gain access to advanced research laboratories, development resourcesand faculty experts in key fields. This support
