Webster* Purdue University rwebste@purdue.edu ABSTRACT A free professional certification exam was adopted as an ad hoc individual remote lab in anintroductory course on the study of polymers and composites after the course was transitioned toremote education due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic in the spring of 2020. Attempting theCertified SOLIDWORKS Associates – Additive Manufacturing (CSWA-AM) exam andwatching the prerequisite 10-part online video learning path helped to replace student learningthat traditionally would have come from various other hands-on laboratory activities. Twenty-five engineering technology (ET) students

to understand some concepts that I’m not familiar with at all © American Society for Engineering Education, 2021 2021 ASEE Illinois-Indiana Section Conference Proceedings | Paper ID 35162 o I think the most difficult part will be getting a good grasp on the concept of my group research topic.  Lack of in-person or hands-on experience (4 mentions) o I think the fact that the research is virtual may be challenging o I think the fact that we will not be working in campus and not being able to work in the laboratory  Getting started (1 mention) o It is just hard to get started, and knowing how to operate with the team but it

ID 35246course for the mechatronics engineering major, it also serves as an elective for upper lever EE,CpE, and ME students. This course was offered for the first time in the spring of 2020, but an unanticipated shift to onlineinstruction impacted the latter half of the course and influenced assessment results. This paperreports on the course design and particular laboratory experiences, as well as the studentperformance in the (hybrid) pilot of the course. There is existing literature describing similar courses, however, few papers describe these coursesin enough detail to replicate, and many do not cover the exact content that is desired of theMechatronics Systems Design course presented in this work [1]-[9]. Furthermore, few of thesepapers
