Abstract

This study was conducted as part of Mercer on Missions (MOM), an international service learning program at Mercer University. This project was conducted at the Corozal Junior College (CJC), aimed at identifying and addressing the specific needs of CJC faculty and students to drive future MOM initiatives. To achieve this, our team developed interview and focus group protocols based on a mission statement's objectives. Interviews were conducted with faculty and staff, while focus groups were organized with a sample of CJC students. Data collection was followed by a comprehensive analysis to determine which areas would benefit from future MOM trips. The findings were presented in an interactive session to CJC's faculty, staff, and students. The session began with participants scanning a QR code that led to an open-ended survey designed to capture their feedback on the identified areas for future missions. Participants were asked to provide their input, suggest any additional areas of need, and rank the proposed initiatives on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being the highest priority. The survey results indicated that the most critical need identified by participants was higher education and scholarship training. Specifically, there was a strong desire for workshops that focus on how to find and apply for merit-based scholarships. These findings will guide future MOM efforts, ensuring that the program continues to meet the evolving needs of CJC and its community.
