Dimitra Michalaka, Ph.D., P.E., is an associate professor in the civil, environmental and construction engineering department at The Citadel, the Associate Director for the Center for Connected Multimodal Mobility (C2M2), and a register professional engineer at the state of SC. She received her undergraduate diploma in civil engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2007. Shortly thereafter she moved to the United States to pursue graduate studies at the University of Florida. She graduated with a M.S. in CE in 2009 and a Ph.D. in 2012. Dr. Michalaka is passionate about teaching in college and K-12 levels and conducting research in both transportation engineering, focused on traffic operations, congestion pricing, and traffic simulation, and engineering education. In 2020, she also obtained a Master of Science in Project Management from The Citadel.

Stephanie Laughton is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Citadel, The Military
College of South Carolina. She acquired a Bachelor's in Civil & Environmental Engineering with Honors from Duke
University followed by Master's and Doctoral degrees in the same field from Carnegie Mellon University.
Laughton’s research interests include engineering education and pedagogy, sustainability education, and
environmental nanotechnology.

Abstract

Workforce preparation is critical for college graduates to achieve their professional goals and therefore is an essential goal for colleges and universities. According to the Association for Career and Technical Education, career readiness involves having academic, employability, and technical skills. From literature, effective engineering education along with extra and co-curricular activities noticeably help students be ready for their future careers. Higher education institutions are making considerable efforts to encourage student involvement in extra and co-curricular activities. Every fall, sophomores, juniors, and seniors at a teaching institution are surveyed regarding their summer co-curricular activities. This paper analyzes the data collected the last two years and examines correlations to student academic performance, via course grades. In addition, junior and senior summer activities are tracked over the past two years to examine if student preferences and choices altered between the sophomore and junior year.
