Undergraduate students without muchexposure to alternatives to these stereotypes may not envision themselves as being able to orwanting to do research. At the same time, research experiences may be the most accessibleduring an undergraduate degree at a research institution. Explicitly exposing students to research,especially students who feel they do not fit the cultural stereotype, may be a step to ultimatelyincrease diversity among graduate students and faculty members in engineering.
