informed choice. The common intellectualtheme is presented in the context of a mini-conference – bringing together a variety of technical Page 15.1075.4and professional competencies to meet a uniquely 21st century challenge. One of therequirements of this freshman composition course has been that students must “watch” andanalyze the news (using online tools such as Google news and its archives) to be aware of whatis going on space exploration and how new developments can affect specific technical orengineering opportunities and society. Appendix B is an informal summary of some of the mainevents that demonstrated that “space exploration” is a

importance of their professional engagement in public welfare. This paper utilizesunique quantitative longitudinal panel data which follow cohorts of engineering students at fourdiverse institutions (MIT, UMass, Smith and Olin) for four years. In order to determine ifprofessional socialization cultivates engaged and socially conscious engineers, I analyze (a)whether engineering programs actually emphasize ethical engagement in issues of publicwelfare, (b) whether students’ social consciousness and belief in the importance of publicengagement increase over the course of their college careers, and (c) whether programmaticemphasis is causally related to these changes. The results suggest there is much work to be done:Not only do programs lack an

Without that key person at the center, the community has no linchpin; yet that central person is not the star of the community.3. Expect great things from students, but don’t tell them what. As Steven Chu says, it is exhilarating and frightening to be given both freedom and expectations. Today’s students often expect to be given a rubric with every assignment, ideally with the requirements for success (what is required for an A grade, a B grade, etc.) clearly spelled out very specifically and maybe even very quantifiably. It is more comfortable for both teachers and students if assignments have specific

of these topics in engineering educationfor many years. Yet, engineering programs continue to struggle with the development of bestpractices for teaching communication and teamwork principles that are contextual, meaningful, and applicable. The purpose of this paper is to highlight a curricular revision that foregroundsteamwork instruction in a freshman Introduction to Robotic Systems Design course. First, wehighlight our approach to teamwork instruction to prepare students to be effective interpersonalcommunicators and collaborative writers. Next, we assess our efforts through (a) studentfeedback via course evaluations, comparing this year’s data with last year’s; (b) students’ peerevaluations; (c) students’ team progress reports, assessing

emerged during the 1980s to refer to theeconomic relationship among countries. In this image, preparing engineers for international workis a crucial practice in a multi-sectoral (industry-university-government) effort to advanceAmerican economic competitiveness in a world in which private industry has gone multinationalin scope. The broad image of economic competitiveness has arguably provided the dominantU.S. frame for planetary relations since the decline and end of the Cold War [24-31]. Theexpectation of a link between engineering education and economic competitiveness is notsurprising since engineering educators have been adjusting curricula to fit the broader, evolvinggoal of low-cost production for mass consumption since the 1870s [32

Due process allows for equity and fair play.21 Safety engineering as the instrumental arm of injury epidemiology, including the codedevelopment

At thetime, discussions in preparation for ASEE‟s 1955 Grinter Report, which were expected to serveas the basis for new ECPD accreditation criteria, suggested that faculty research would be animportant

, Mexico, challenging engineering students enrolled in the course Engineering and Sustainable Community DevelopmentAbstractOver the past ten years, engineers and engineering students and faculty have increasingly turnedtheir efforts toward “underserved” communities. Such efforts raise important questions. Is thereanything problematic with wanting to help a community? How do engineers listen to acommunity? If invited, how do engineers work with a community?Wondering about questions like these in relationship to engineering courses, design projects, volunteer activities, or international assignments motivated us to develop a project in criticalpedagogy entitled Engineering and
