. In these courses, Solid Edge 3 is used. First-year studentsare also introduced to the design process through two projects. In the first semester, they perform areverse engineering team project and, in the second semester, there is a team conceptual design project. In the curriculum of the mechanical engineering department at Binghamton University, the Computer-Aided Engineering course (ME 481) was a technical elective until 2004-5. The course is now requiredin the first semester of the third year. The prerequisites for the course are the mechanics courses(statics, dynamics and solid mechanics). This course is the initial course in an upper-division four-semester design sequence. It is followed in the second semester of the third year by the
form of a student edition (with some limitations) free of charge to all students, teachers, and higher education faculty taking part in the programs.Programs Initiated under the PRIMES GrantTo date the authors have engaged in several distinct outreach activities with the Bristol Warren SchoolDistrict in the Middle School (Kickemuit Middle School) and High School (Mt. Hope High School). Wedescribe five of these activities below. Tutorial for Teachers in Pro-EAs mentioned in the previous section, the software package Pro-E was selected to serve as a platform toassist with 3-D visualization. As such, one of the first PRIMES activities (not organized by the authors)was a two-day training session for the teachers who had decided to take part
, they began calling organizations that worked with the elderly tosee what suggestions might be provided by those in the trenches. This digging resulted in thefinal project idea. In spite of the forgivable diplomatic error in defining people in the 50—60 agegroup as “elderly,” this group did a good, practical analysis of the costs and benefits of expandingan existing, successful program to a new area of need.Project #3: Heifer in NamibiaThis project grew out of the students’ excitement and engagement. These students had not heardof Heifer International until this course; the day spent at the Heifer farm seemed to galvanize theirinterest. They saw an opportunity to connect WPI’s existing Global Perspectives Program and itsProject Center in
. The SDOE graduate program(http://www.stevens.edu/sse/academics/graduate/sdoe/ ) has been very well received and delivered inmodular form world-wide to industry and government agencies that are involved with complex systems. The program was initially a certificate program directed to practitioners and working professionals butthis has subsequently expanded to include masters and doctoral degrees. The faculty and scope of theprograms has grown rapidly leading to the recent formation of a School of Systems & Enterprises 1(http://www.stevens.edu/sse) with a significant national and international impact in the systemsengineering field. The presence of a strong graduate-level activity in the
