all declared engineeringmajors who planned to spend four years on the MSU campus and obtain and engineering degreethrough the cooperative engineering program. Now the class has a mixture of at least three orpossibly four different groups of students. One group is made up of students who plan to stay in Springfield and complete their engineeringdegree through the MSU/Missouri S&T cooperative engineering program similar, to thosestudents who initially enrolled in the course when it was offered for the first time.A second group of students are those who plan to major in engineering and plan to start at MSUbut then transfer to Missouri S&T or another engineering program. This typically because theyeither do not reside in the nine county

Instruction) in addition to theAlumni Office. This project was an attempt to create an atmosphere which fostered theexperience of engineering in a global, economic, environmental and societal context; wherestudents worked with other students and faculty from different disciplines. Additionally the goalwas to create a spirit of service where engineering and other students would learn by experiencethe culture of sharing their abilities and talents with others beyond the boundaries of theirindividual comfort zone. Major project deliverables were the following: design of a solar batterycharging unit; a marketing plan including press releases, website, project brochures, andspeaking engagements; testing and repair of donated laptops; educational software

, studentshave difficulty relating concepts to real-world systems. These issues, along with the advantagesof PLP stated earlier have prompted us to revise the course around the new platform.Section 2 describes simulators and platforms similar the PLP system, and presents the uniquefeatures of PLP. Section 3 describes the approach taken by the instructors for transformingEngineering Science 3213, Computer Based Systems. Section 4 discusses how the course servesas a platform for educational research, and what studies will be set up to gauge the effectivenessof PLP. Section 5 presents our conclusions, ongoing work, and future plans. The Appendixprovides some documents that have resulted from the transformation of CBS.2. Related WorkMany universities use

complete an end of semester course evaluation form. This paper discusseshow the Department has modified its end of course evaluation form to include a student self-assessment section. This self-assessment section generates indirect assessment data, whichcomplements the traditional direct assessment data.IntroductionUALR offers baccalaureate degrees in Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology(ECET) and Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET). As with all degrees accredited byABET, these degree programs are required to implement a continuous improvement plan (CIP).ABET states that1: “The program must use a documented process incorporating relevant data toregularly assess its program educational objectives and program outcome, and to evaluate

groups were first briefed on the carbohydratecontent of algae and how it might be extracted, and then were given time to locate techniques onthe internet for extracting sugars from biomass. The student groups each decided on a plan ofattack within the constraints of available materials, implemented the plans, and then submittedsamples for sugar analysis. Procedures ranging from mild acid or base hydrolysis to enzymatichydrolysis (from human saliva) were tried. While waiting for sample analysis, the studentsplayed with a remote-controlled car that was fueled with biobutanol. Results from the ProgramsSeveral measurable results were obtained from the three summer programs which demonstrategrowth, interest and early success: • In 2010, EEP1 had

Design Manual Project. Most, if not all, of these skills are addressed by the Design Manual Project. Students will continueto acquire new tools with on-the-job experience including perhaps an increased ability to handleuncertainty or to make estimates–tools which require more hands-on experience. The primary tool developed by the Design Manual Project is a design philosophy. The num-ber of considerations that need to be made when designing or selecting a machine component issometimes overwhelming without some sort of plan or design philosophy. For example, whiledeveloping the design manual for springs a student must ask themselves: How does one select aextension spring? The answer is by asking the right questions! In writing a manual students

or groups, through the counseling relationship, to develop understanding of personal problems, define goals, and plan action reflecting interests, abilities, aptitudes, and needs. Counseling/Psychotherapy is the application of mental health, psychological, or human development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic intervention strategies that address wellness, personal growth, or career development, as well as pathology.” 12There are two points within this definition that are significant to the context of Ansanm. First, acounselor‘s role is to assist in understanding needs. Once these needs are identified andunderstood, the next logical step is to address how to meet those needs

The RepRap project was conceived and developed by Dr. AdrianBowyer, a senior lecturer in engineering at the University of Bath, UK. It has been describedas a “small manufacturing plant in your own home.” The plans for the RepRap 3D printerand detailed tutorials are available for free on their web site. The RP unit again uses the FDMmethod. See Figure 7. The parts cost about $750. It

requested at the design review. Then, the emphasis shifts to ordering materials and fabricating a functional prototype. In particular, adetailed budget is presented at the design review, with the students ordering parts (afterinstructor review and approval or modification) early in the third semester. With respect tomanufacturing, students are expected to perform as much of the fabrication themselves aspossible with departmental resources while taking advantage of the Engineering machine shop.In addition, they must plan and complete testing of their prototype in order to evaluate itsfunctionality. Of course, the students must also generate a final oral presentation and writtenreport for their client and the instructor.Discussion of Advantages and

students were able to calculate the loan repayment amount, but couldnot reconstruct a loan table to show how much of each payment was interest. There is also somespeculation that since the students knew the grades for the Post-Test would not be dependent ontheir scores they chose to not attempt the table portion.Somewhat Known, Somewhat LearnedWhen planning the curriculum, this category needs to be reconsidered. These are problemswhich the students did somewhat well on the Pre-Test and only moderately better on the Post-Test. This indicates less time could be devoted to these concepts, or more time needs to bedevoted to these to get to a mastery level. This category includes problems 3, 6, 8, and 9.Problem 3 involved order of operations and

American Society for Engineering Education 7Each quadrant of the cycle is characterized by a question that is essential in grasping the conceptof teaching through the cycle. These questions are used as the basis for the learning cycle.Through personal experiences, questions such as “why”, “what”, “how”, and “what if?” aredeveloped as shown in Figure 2. The purpose of the first quadrant is to provide a clear image ofthe overall subject and to discuss future plans by providing a better understanding of thematerials to aid in establishing goals. Additionally, the questions provide answers for real lifeapplications.39 In the second quadrant, the
