FLS reflections had to be completedbefore class and were meant as a mechanism to ensure students actively watched the videos. We emphasizedsurveying the students before and after the demonstrations with discussions to get students moreactively involved in the demonstrations. . Student were asked to reflect on how intellectually stimulating the MatLab projects were,with a rating of 1 being “not very stimulating”, a rating of 3 being “just right” and 5 being “toomuch”. The overall results were mediocre, with an average score of 3.10 ± 0.71. We believe thisis because students equate intellectual stimulation with difficulty. Intellectual stimulation isdefined as being encouraged to innovate and be creative, as well as encouraged to critical thinkand problem-solve. Intellectual stimulation involves arousing students’ thoughts and imagination[8]. However students tend to think that more thought means more work and thus an increasedlevel of difficulty. The technique of adaptivequestioning is effective at addressing common persistent misunderstandings. Examples of thesequence of questions are described.
