, DC 20059Project-based learning (PBL) is an instructional method that engages students in projects forstudying compelling problems. The method creates a flexible learning environment which canresult in imparting thinking competencies. In this paper, the effects of incorporating design-build (DB) attributes into the PBL method in an engineering materials laboratory arepresented. Traditionally, the laboratory had utilized conventional testers to measure themechanical properties of materials such as the modules of elasticity, shear modulus, Poisson’sratio of variety of materials. In the DB-PBL approach, the student teams designed and builtsingle-task testers to measure a specific property of materials. The assessment resultsindicate that

He had been actively involved in planning, designing, supervising, and constructing many civil engineering projects, such as roads, storm drain systems, a $70 million water supply scheme which is comprised of treatment works, hydraulic mains, access roads, and auxiliary civil works. He had developed and opti- mized many highway design schemes and models. For example, his portfolio includes a cost-effective pavement design procedure based on a mechanistic approach, in contrast to popular empirical procedures. In addition, he had

are needed for faculties, who wish to make most use of available resourcesand to result in any meaningful research outcomes. In this study, detailed planning and strategiesare discussed for successful undergraduate research, followed by demonstration of sometechnical outcomes of the research.2. MethodologyAfter September 11, blast effects caused by possible terrorist attacks have been consideredincreasingly in structural designs. Certain attempts to attack major transportation andgovernment infrastructures have been discovered or prevented, but some others causedcatastrophic results, leaving significant fatalities, damages and interruptions to the facilities [7].Most available engineering approaches for blast resistant design were developed

defined for November 1, 2016.V. Laser Modulation CircuitThe Engineering Team’s first challenge was to create a circuit that would superimpose an audiosignal onto the laser circuit to cause the brightness of the laser to vary in time and intensity perthe rhythm and volume of the music. This challenge was greater because none of the Teammembers were well versed in electronics and had not even completed an introductory Circuitscourse. The approach was to begin with the simplest circuit possible so that the Team couldunderstand the function of the circuit and increase the complexity as required. The laser modulation circuit consisted of a variable voltage power supply, an AM/FM radio withan audio-output port, and a laser pointer. The concept of the

physics lab report writing and undergraduate research paper writing.I. IntroductionThe City University of New York instituted a writing intensive component in its curriculummore than ten years ago. Queensborough Community College (QCC), being a junior college inthe CUNY System, requires two writing intensive courses for graduation. Our PhysicsDepartment has designated Calculus Physics and Technology Physics classes as writingintensive classes where lab report writing is a substantial element 1. A quick review of the 2014high school SAT score shows that Engineering majors have higher critical reading scores whencompared to English majors, while English majors have higher writing scores when compared toengineering majors 2, 3. The result would

science curriculums. Harvard University also has a similar teaching laboratory thataccommodates interdisciplinary program such as chemistry, biology, machine shop andprototyping center which provides large workable area per student[2]. Harvard University’slearning lab suite imitated other advanced research facilities such as Syracuse University’sBiomaterials Institute (SBI), which accommodates research focused primarily in Biomaterials.SBI is a multidisciplinary center with a number of distinct adjacent lab facilities for polymersynthesis, biology for tissue culture and molecular biology, and engineering for materialscharacterization. SBI is conducting research in the areas of new technologies for jointreplacement and soft tissue repair

Lastly, incorporatingundergraduate research into the curriculum will expand students’ network of professionals, consequently facilitating the connection of the classroom studies with the industry. graduation.” At the writing of this document, all engineering programs are expectedto have student outcomes (a) – (k), as stated in the Criteria for Accreditation Programs. Whileadditional student outcomes may be articulated by the program, they are needed only if (a) – (k)outcomes do not fully produce graduates that attain the stated program educational objectives. Itis important to note that any additional student outcomes must be assessed and included in thecontinuous improvement process.Curriculum - The curriculum must be designed so that it includes courses that lead to theattainment of the student outcomes and lead to the fulfilment of the Program EducationalObjectives [11]. In addition to ensuring that the minimum appropriate requirements are
