classes, and to what extent it helps students tomeet their objectives and quality of their project work. Since our university operates on a quarteracademic system, each course needs to be completed in just 11 weeks. The number of membersin each group of a capstone is either 3 or 4. One example of the project dealing with anautomated bed clearing mechanism of a 3D printing machine is presented in this paper. A groupof 4 students developed two ideas of this system. The design details of one of these ideas ispresented in this paper. The 3D printer in this example uses Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM)process. Many automotive, aerospace and other sectors are focusing on using functional 3Dprinted parts to either reduce the weight or to replace metal

that measuredthe heart rate of the infant and humidity in the incubator. Both parameters were processed by anArduino microcontroller and data sent to a personal computer for monitoring. For babymonitoring products in the market most devices capture videos and sound from the infant. Onlysome measure vital signs. For example, TempTraq [17] is a single use, 24-hour temperaturemonitoring patch which sends alerts to the parent's smartphone when the infant has a fever. This graduate capstone project is concerned with developing a real-time health monitoringsystem for infants using a microcontroller as the central processing unit and Wi-fi forcommunication to the parent or caregiver. It however does not include developing a database tostore the data

Martinez et al., describes using a Collaborative Web environment to manage acomplex engineering project carried out by the assimilation of various work teams 5. Finally,Oden et al, describes Rice University’s efforts to implement and evaluate outcomes fromcollaboratively teaching capstone design and assigning interdisciplinary teams to solve real-world design challenges6. Rice University Brown School of Engineering opened a facility, theOshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK) which is dedicated to undergraduate engineeringdesign efforts. The facility has space for all 8 engineering department with the goal

. American c Society for Engineering Education, 2020 Holistic Engineering: A Concept Exploration in a Cross- Disciplinary Project Course ExperienceAbstractHolistic engineering is an approach to the engineering profession, rather than an engineeringdiscipline such as civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering. It is inspired by the realization thattraditional engineering does not adequately harness professional skills in its problem-solvingrepertoire. Holistic engineering asks engineers to look outward, beyond the fields of math andscience, in search of solutions to entire problems. While engineering graduates are well preparedin the technical aspects of the engineering

) students have difficulty in synthesizingwhat they learn in their senior capstone projects; (2) our involvement with local industries indicatethe need for graduates with system integration skills who are more in tune with the modern globalworkforce. The system integration skills do not mean a curriculum in system engineering, butrather, preparing students with the ability to synthesize what they learn and know how to apply thetechniques of synthesis in the real world. Industries also desire students who graduate withpractical skills. Internship is the best option for students, but it is not necessary that all studentshave the opportunity to gain internship experience. As a result, the ECE department launched thecurriculum integration initiative to

this project will placethem in a better position in the entry-level industrial job market or will better prepare them forgraduate school. For future semesters, we are planning to assign projects with similar complexity in thesecourses. Future projects are related to materials science and applications. Some possibleprojects are: a thermal conductivity measuring apparatus, a fatigue testing machine and a tensiletest apparatus. In addition, possible improvements to this design have been considered and thesame project could be reassigned in future semesters. It is our intention to evaluate the impact ofthis experience on the student’s capstone project during their final year. Possible project ideaswith an appropriate complexity level for first year

universities where innovative andtechnologically up-to-date curricula are provided to educate the next generation of engineers. This paper outlines the inclusion of a course called Computer Aided Engineering (CAE),which would traditionally be offered at the graduate level, into an undergraduate curriculum as atool to educate and train students early-on as industry-ready professionals. A junior-level course,CAE consists of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA),Computer Aided Design (CAD) and optimization. Although students get trained to use CADsoftware as freshmen, they need additional training on analysis and optimization of engineeringsystems prior to capstone design series. This course provides an opportunity to teach

chosen over other software owing to its additional capability of reporting detailedhand calculations, as well its integration of structural design codes for solving structural designproblems. Our future plans include utilizing the software to solve problems on buckling ofcolumns and structural design, as design codes are integrated in SkyCiv. The main aim of thelearning modules is to develop student competency in the application of commercial software forstructural analysis for solving challenging capstone and other course projects, better preparationfor workforce and graduate studies, complementing hand solution methods, and enhancingstudent engagement. Since SkyCiv was applied to discrete structures, the theoretical knowledgeof FEA is not
