consumerdemand for what farmers produce and for innovative agricultural models.  The goal of this research is to develop a framework for a new technical elective in theDepartment of Architecture and Construction Management that proposes to design and build, with the support of the Urban Horticulture and Design Department, a series of urban micro-farmsthroughout the campus. When this new technical elective is fully developed, the course aspiresto facilitate a hands-on learning experience for the students to apply knowledge obtained fromother courses and evolve the discourse around sustainability, particularly concerning the foodsystem. This work-in-progress paper provides an overview of the proposed course, requiredbackground research, implementation

engineering, there were concerns about how social distancing, especially in laboratory exercises, would affect accreditation. The engineering and technology accrediting board, ABET, issued informationrelatively early about changes due to COVID-19. ABET determined short-term changes due to COVIDwould not need to be reported (ABET, 2020). In addition to concerns about having in-person classes andlab exercises, another concern expressed was how to communicate online in ways that are as effectiveas in person. Universities were prompted to provide additional faculty support for teaching and someeven identified some “hacks” that could be used for a graphical interface (University of Nevada Reno,2020). Other lessons learned include better ways to grade

variation of capstone course delivery including but not limited to:course duration, project scope, project source, project funding, faculty involvement, teamassignments, mix of specialties/disciplines, number of participants, and evaluation process.Important aspects in developing new or enhancing current capstones need to include:  Active learning that support developing new and applying existing knowledge [31]  Amount / type of involvement of professionals and experts with relevant design experience  Length of the course (one or two semesters) to allow for detailed investigations [32]  Number of faculty involved who have significant engineering design experience  Available resources such as computer labs equipped with a

backgroundinformation for the pandemic, the broad institutional response, and online education. The COVID-19 PandemicThe World Health Organization identified the COVID-19 virus as a public health emergency ofinternational concern on January 30, 2020 [3] and declared the infectious disease a pandemic onMarch 11, 2020 [4], as it spread worldwide. COVID-19 was initially categorized as having azoonotic basis where the pathogen is transferrable from an animal host such as a bat to a human[5]. The US exceeded 500,000 fatalities in January 2021 due to COVID-19 [6]. COVID-19became the third leading cause of death behind heart disease and cancer for individuals betweenthe ages of 45 and 84 [7]. The average age of faculty falls within the 45 to 84 range. The virus is

courses  Faculty experience varies considerably resulting in important provisions being skimmed over or ignored Many of these identified issues largely stem from faculty experience with codes themselves. This is due to the background education of faculty and that most faculty do not or have not practicedin the industry where code knowledge is mandatory. Based on ill formatting and expertise, importantprovisions may be skimmed over or left out, or substituted by other work, and less stringentenforcement of codes in design adherence on projects. These can be compounded when a course getsmigrated from one instructor to another for various reasons. Here, specific details change becausedepartment wide syllabus information do not

struggling students. This was resolved once teachingassistants started being utilized. The faculty has learned that a minimum of two instructors areneeded when teaching or introducing new software in order to provide additional support to thestudents. As the course started to be offered to additional majors, outside of Construction Management, the fundamentals of construction as well as basic construction workflows became an importantaspect of the course. Due to the course transition, this was some students’ first construction-related course. The material and lecture content had to be adjusted in order for students tounderstand the basics, such as: nominal and real lumber dimensions, construction materials, definition of a clash detection, introduction

or sociological factors like work environment and having role models andmentors also often influence an individual’s career choice [16]. In fact, many women share thathaving a family member in the construction industry attracted them to a similar field in a studyconducted on women in construction trades [20].However, not all factors have a positive influence. On the issues faced by women inconstruction, 14 of 24 married study participants in Moore’s study [19] raised concerns regardingwork-life balance and having challenges to satisfy the job demand and family responsibilities. With construction industry acknowledging that women workers are the untapped resources,Fielden, Davidson, Gale and Davey [13] conducted focus groups with construction

highlights the ineffectiveness of one-way, lecture-based teaching and strongly advocates that faculty adopt new pedagogies that integratetechnological tools. Such strategies actively engage learners and support their understanding. Torevolutionize the traditional haptic learning pedagogy, Virtual Reality (VR) can be incorporatedto support science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students’ level oflearning, advance their communication skills and enhance problem-solving skills. VR is atechnological tool that immerses students in the real built environment and utilizes different partsof the brain to access auditory and visual data. This ongoing, work in progress, research studydescribes the process of interweaving between engineering
