Strategies for Success in a Neuroinclusive Large Mechanics of Materials ClassAbstractThe Mechanics of Materials course is a core offering at the University of Connecticut, catering tostudents majoring in civil, mechanical, manufacturing, and biomedical engineering. Delivered ina flipped classroom format, students engage with video materials that cover the theory outside ofclass. In class, students focus on developing problem-solving skills, exploring real-lifeapplications of mechanics concepts, and participating in multiple active learning activities. In2020, the course underwent a redesign to align with inclusive teaching standards, aimed atproviding support to neurodivergent students. For the Spring 2023 semester, the course

, 2024 Student Led Curriculum Development: Incorporating Mechanics of Materials Students in the Design of Statics Curricula. A Work in Progress.Abstract Students are a valuable stakeholder in curriculum design, yet they are seldom involved incurricular design efforts. One of the main concerns inhibiting student involvement in curriculumdevelopment is their perceived lack of required knowledge and pedagogical training. However, what if the goals for including students in curriculum design were not exclusively focused oncreating adoptable curricula? The purpose of this study was to provide students enrolled in a summer term ofmechanics of materials an opportunity to develop a learning

engineering, a comprehensive understanding of variousmaterials is essential for developmental projects. This understanding encompasses the origins, formations, physical attributes, mechanical properties, and decay behavior of materials, forminga fundamental knowledge base. Proficiency in the materials used in civil engineering is crucialfor tasks such as selection, processing, utilization, ongoing maintenance, and eventual recycling[2]. For aspiring civil engineers aiming to excel in their profession, a thorough understanding ofcivil engineering materials is imperative. Specialized courses like Civil Engineering Materials(CEM) play a pivotal role in imparting this knowledge. CEM course is designed to equipstudents with the skills needed to address

This paper discusses theimplementation of three different project-based assignments in three different upper-levelundergraduate civil engineering courses at the University of Connecticut. All these three courses, viz., Mechanics of Materials, Soil Mechanics, and Principles of Construction-I had largeenrollments (n >75). previous knowledge of mechanical-based engineering concepts [4].Even though the field has been prevalent for decades, research into its educational aspect islacking. Research that does exist reveals course requirements for similar degrees vary acrossdifferent universities in the United States and abroad [2],[3],[4]. While unsurprising, this bringsup a question of how we can best prepare the next generation of transportation engineers from aneducational standpoint. A recent study from 2013 provides a broad overview of the current stateof students’ introduction to transportation engineering via a survey of 84 of the 224 civilengineering programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology(ABET) [3]. This study revealed that

Geotechnical Engineering - A Case StudyAbstract ABET 2019-20 Criterion 3 requires that engineering students at the time of graduationpossess the “ability to communicate effectively with a range of audience”. This paper presents acase study of the author’s approach to achieve this outcome in a junior level soil mechanicscourse. In the laboratory portion of the soil mechanics course, students were presented with areal-life problem faced by a fictious client. Students performed standard laboratory experiments, analyzed the data, and compared their experimental results against applicable guidelines or codesto arrive at recommendations to the client. Students prepared technical reports with clients aspotential audience and learned the fundamentals

More importantly, regardless of ethnicbackground, parental education levels, and family knowledge and economic practices, allstudents benefit from having personal finance materials incorporated into college curriculums[6]. The index oflearning styles survey generates a profile for each participant based upon 4 dimensions. Theseinclude: Active-Reflective, Sensing-Intuitive, Visual-Verbal, and Global-Sequential. The firstdimension is associated with the way a participant processes information. Active learners bestlearn information by working actively, and applying the material while reflective learners like tothink and reflect on the material.
