These graduate students provide communicationinstruction in the classroom, consult with students on their writing and speaking, and work withengineering faculty on assignment (re)design.I worked with the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department. ElectricalEngineering can be characterized as a hyper-masculine discipline, consisting of mostly malestudent and faculty bodies.5 The ECE department at this university currently contains less than10% female faculty members (three out of thirty-four) and similarly, less than 10% of thestudents are female, thus, making this context a exaggerated contradiction of masculine andfeminine cultures for study. using the ethnographic methods of participantobservation and semi-structured interviews. Field notes, pictures, and audio recordings werecollected from classroom observations. This multimedia data collection helped to fill in mynotes, as I was often asked by teachers and students to help work through some of the pedagogicand technical aspects of implementing Mindstorms. After observing implementation in theclassroom, 30min-70min semi-structured interviews were conducted with each teacher. students use either a scriptor notecards to come up with their words. While such a strategy might be appropriate for aliberal arts student making a political speech, the strategy is not appropriate for an engineeringstudent giving a technical presentation. Put simply, in most of their technical presentations,engineers will not carry credibility by reading scripts or speaking from note cards. As this paper shows, expert speakers in engineering and science typically fashionsentences on the spot, but do so after practice with a planned structure.
